I’m trying to understand the roadmap here-
Is Babylon X slated to drop backwards compatibility?
Is Babylon Lite a precursor to the full Babylon X?
Is Babylon Lite going to exist alongside Babylon X?
Is 9 the last stop for WebGL?
I want to aim my projects correctly. The Lite performance metrics can’t be ignored, but the compatibility is a hard tradeoff.
Babylon Lite is Babylon X & ditches backward compatibility.
Versions of Babylon 9, 10, 11… and later will continue to exist and be updated.
There is no end to WebGL
Not sure what Babylon X is (maybe something I have missed?), but if you mean Babylon.js 10 - it will continue following the guidelines of the main babylon.js repo.
Babylon Lite is not backwards compatible (though we do our best not to change public contracts unless needed)
Babylon X was a talk 2 years ago. It was to survey users on a potential improvement of the engine to make it faster, lighter…
Babylon Lite is finally what was released 2 years later.
So a compatibility branch and a performance branch with no crossover. “..switch between them..” seems misleading given disparate architectures.
You’re just going to maintain two almost identical projects forever?
The switch between them in a possibility we offer you in case you need it. You will need for sure to adapt the code, but we promise you similar visual output.
Both engines serve different needs and scenarios, we believe both have their place in the community (that’s why we started lite :)).
