Default Orientation of Imported Mesh?

What is the default “world” orientation of a mesh when it is imported into a scene?
Should I prepare my model facing positive or negative Z, or something else?

I have looked for the answer but I may be searching the wrong keywords.

I mean in terms of the workspace coordinates within the modeling environment independent of the camera. Like in orthographic projections used to place vertices, etc.
