I started game development with pen and paper, eventually upgrading to a manual typewriter. At the time, the games I wanted to build were simply beyond the capabilities of current personal computers (e.g. it was estimated that the memory required just to represent the data in a single map tile of Squad Leader was more than a maxed out Apple II had). The first 3d software I used, Mac 3D, rendered 1-bit images (using stippling to simulate greyscale shading). In 1992, I wrote a 3d animation program as part of an never-to-be-completed graduate degree in Fine Arts.
I’ve since designed and co-developed a multiplayer RPG (Prince of Destruction), several other unreleased games, a mobile game (Manta 2010), oversaw the development of several children’s games, all the while writing much more boring software for corporate overlords.
I have just moved to Finland where the long nights and better work/life balance may afford me time for more entertaining pursuits.
