ALONE – a narrative survival game made with Babylon.js (trailer)

Hi Babyloniers!

I’m currently developing ALONE, a narrative survival game that runs in the browser, and I wanted to share the progress.

You play Danny, who lives alone in a forest years after civilization ended, listening to radio signals from an almost empty world. To survive, you have to:

  • Scavenge the forest and abandoned places for materials
  • Craft tools and keep your shelter running
  • Grow crops: plant, water and harvest your own food
  • Raise hens for eggs
  • Fish the river and cook what you gather
  • Defend yourself during night sieges
  • Explore to find hidden places and old bunkers
  • Get around on an old bike
  • Pass the time with mini-games: radio chess, Morse code, lockpicking, soldering, photography and more

…and plenty more surprises waiting to be found.

ALONE has a full story, but the game doesn’t stop when the story does. Once you reach the end of the narrative, life goes on: you keep up your daily routines, scavenge for new materials as they turn up, make contact with other survivors over the radio and trade with them. It’s a world you can keep living in.

It has an isometric camera and flat-shaded low-poly art, with a day/night cycle and weather.

Technical bits:

  • Babylon.js 9
  • Character always visible: anything between the camera and Danny dissolves in a dithered circle around him (screen-space + depth test in a PBRCustomMaterial shader, discard with interleaved gradient noise, so no transparency sorting and no extra pass)
  • KTX2 GPU textures, which cut texture memory from about 400 MB to about 106 MB
  • Installable offline web app (PWA): once it’s loaded, you can play without a connection
  • Keyboard, full gamepad support and touch controls
  • English and Spanish, picked automatically from the browser

Tools & assets

  • Code: built with vibe coding (AI-assisted programming), also used to generate some assets
  • Character: designed in Character Creator
  • Animations: Universal Animation Library by Quaternius, plus custom ones made in Blender (bike riding, attacks…)
  • 3D models: mostly modeled in 3ds Max and Blender, some made with AI
  • Images & art: generated with GPT Image 2
  • Music & voice-over: ElevenLabs

Here’s the 60-second trailer. Everything in it is real in-game footage:
