In this other topic (Walking on Snow) @Tricotou attaches boxes to the feet of the character. You can add a collider to those boxes to get the desired effect I think.
Using the character geometry directly is often not the best idea as it is very detailed and will deform (which is not supported by rigidbody based physics engines), so having proxy box colliders is often a good workaround.
Yes, @CrashMaster is right: attach the physics to the feet. Use simpler shapes (box, sphere,..). Mesh physics shape is commonly just for static environment.
