if you apply momentum to the sphere, it will never stop, the value of friction is not affected, although it seems to me they should. Where am I confused?
I think it is because you are using a sphere which has point contact with floor and so friction ends up not being applied. What happens with a box?

Physics engines only use friction on collisions. once a collision triggered the friction won’t influence the impulse. With cannon you can add damping to simulate friction on constant move:
