Twisted Babylon - Dev Log

Hoookay… I know that I post way too many demos but I swear this is a good one! I needed a way to showcase my Box3D plugin plus had a bunch of systems scattered throughout 20+ years of dev work and decided “what happens when we just put all that together”. Sooo I came up with the idea to do a throwback to old school PS1 classic Twisted Metal.

Got all the tools together for the project made from scratch. A low polygon modeling suite with UV editing and projection painting, a garage for attaching and building car components to create your car from scratch (everything is physically accurate too), A full fledge level editor (which also the garage and level editor have the 3d modeling tool built into them so you can edit anything in realtime in context)… A Noise Lab for generating one shot retro game sounds. A Voice booth for generating Doom like narrator voices, a Music Lab which is a full retro DAW, and then an Art Lab for editing, creating, and maintain the art inventory and keeping an aesthetic balance.

BUUUUT now that all that is done its time to actually create the content for the game… which is tedious and to me unrewarding…

Anyways here is a preview of Twisted Babylon…

Plan is to launch the single player and split screen demo by next week and then wrap up multiplayer and the user runtime tools for the public launch which I think Ill target steam.

Onto content creation… fun fun.

Looks so good!

Its surprisingly fun to design your car from the ground up and drive it around, then make adjustments because you set up the weight distribution wrong or the weapons angle is off a bit when you drive. Tweaking your suspension etc. Its really cool too because you can modify it in real-time by moving the modules around or going into edit mode on them and 3d modeling on them directly in context.

Ill post a video here soon of some play and how to create a car from scratch.

The pixelated effects / style look great, I think they fit the theme really well.

Just finished up “Punch Buggy”

Ohh I forgot to mention everything is soft body physics, you wrap yourself around a tree the car actually does that… the colliders deform in real-time and the driving physics of the car shifts.

“Peter Mac” before weapons.

I hate level design but here is a half finished one.

Ended up redoing it, its based off a 1900 Murder Drome.

I love the 8 ball!

I stayed up way too late last night working on assets…

“Stomper”

“Doughnut”

“Cherry Bomb”

“Bore Hound”

They are all a ton of fun to drive and all handle way different. I have enough now for the demo, just need to finish up three more levels. Do sound design, game flow for campaign, refine ai… blah blah

I’m going to be doing a live stream here soon showcasing everything that has been done and the current state of the project if anyone is interested… Ill post the link within the hour. Ill be open to questions as well.

This is absolutely insane!
Can’t wait to play this… but I’ll admit. All the tools you have going blew my mind :exploding_head:
You just got into my short list of people to follow ( and the list is one hand short).
