FMLayoutLens - Using BabylonJS to build analysis tools for FileMaker developers

Hi everyone! I just want to show off the coolest project I’ve worked on this year (so far!).

FMLayoutLens is a layout analysis tool for FileMaker developers. It is built as a desktop app for Windows and macOS. The backend (core) is C# and the frontend (UI) is all built in a web view, with a simple JSON-based communication layer between the core and UI. My role was the frontend, where I used Vue JS and Babylon JS to create this awesome UI.

Some cool things about the 3D view

  • We use depth in 3D to highlight how objects are stacked and overlap
  • Easily toggle between orthographic and perspective modes
  • Auto-move the camera on object selection
  • Depth scaler to increase the space between objects

I recorded a short tour of the app:

The app is in early access, and there are a lot of issues to work out, but I’m proud of the work we did on this and the huge role that Babylon JS has in this product.

If there are any FileMaker devs here, you can check out FMLayoutLens here:

Woot! this is crazy good! Thanks a lot for sharing
