Idea based on the old narrow gauge railways that brought slate down from the quarries in Snowdonia to the coast. The locomotive is based on the Fairlie locos produced around the 1830s for the slate quarries. The railways survive as a tourist attraction now
Switch cameras at any time with the “c” key. Goes from an ArcRotate to a camera bound to the engine. Click on the little red signals to start engine (easiest with bound camera - you can just switch back as you want). Signals become active when you stop in front of them.
All created in Blender, the train animation is a baked (every two frames) from an “animate on a curve”
Steam particles and terrain texture created with Babylon.JS code.
The locomotive I used as a model for the engine was the “Fairlie Single”. Now the Fairlie company produced a variety of locos including the one in the image below. It had two boilers, two smokestacks, two sets of driving wheels - but only one cab right in the middle. A single locomotive that was known as the “Fairlie Double” and it is still running today for tourists. The image below shows two of them together !!
Needed quite gradual curves - so could not de done on the demo as curves are too sharp.
