As part of my effort to alpha test my current project https://poqpoq.com/ (shameless plug for alpha testers) I built in gpu detection and (ethical - aggregate) tracking of user system config to detect insufficient machine performance - an alarming number of testers so far are using their machine’s onboard gpu instead of the high performance gpu that is on the same machine. Users often haven’t set the browser gate to prefer 3d acceleration, AND they haven’t added their browsers to the apps that are preferring performance over energy savings.
The difference for most users is a gain of up to 60fps in performance of course, but the pain of guiding users thru fixing their boxes is significant. This seems like serious 2005 era tech debt - why not simplify that for users? Anyone know anyone who could potentially suggest a new standard - to just pop those browsers into the system: display: graphics: custom set so it starts out like this…
That’s a pretty picture, no? Then we could form a small army to twist arms on browser companies to make their default hardware acceleration enabled - and life would be better for everyone. We could tell the biz heads that ai wants it.
