What does apple trying to phase out OpenGL mean for us in the long run?
Anyone have any good input on this?

Well, I’m not sure we will be affected by that.
The browsers will for sure and they wil have to write their webgl implementation on top of metal
Also Apple seems to be motivated by WebGPU which is something we are working on to support in babylon.js (just to be prepared :))

Yeah I was starting my research on where things are going and it seems webGPU is gaining traction. I did not realize Apple was serous about fazing out OpenGL till my lady was like “hey what does this mean for you?” and I about spit up my coffee.

I did see this response from Ken Russell to somebodies annual trolling about WebGL2. The first peek behind the walls at Apple as to why they have not put WebGL2 out yet.
