How to make this VR particle demo more interesting? Bizarre materials, etc

OK, I have what I would call a “pretty good” VR particle demo:

I have a question that… well, it might make no sense? But if you used PBR on the materials of the particles would that do anything cool?

PBR on particle will not add a lot (and will make it slower)

I honestly find it already quite interesting

I was thinking about it last night-- and I was wondering if you put a 3d model in front of it (like, a statue of Socrates, haha), will you get volumetric lighting effects(ish) stuff happening?
