Lightning storm vfx scorch marks

I want to add a scorch marks on the ground from random lightning strikes. The lightning uses animated sprite particles in a cylinder emitter. If I attach a subemitter at the end that uses a cone emitter, how can I change the position of the subemitter’s cone to start at the ground? Is custom function the only way to achieve this effect?

Apparently, the custom function for particle systems (startDirectionFunction,startPositionFunction and updateFunction) does not extend to sub-emitters. Marking as solved.
